| Motor Boats: For Sale: 45’ Lake Union “Dreamboat” Antique Woode |
 |
Docked in Portland, Oregon …
Designed by famed naval architect Ted Geary this boat was built by the Lake Union Dry Dock and Machine Works of Seattle, WA, in 1930. The Lake Union Co. built many of the most respected Classic Yachts produced on the West Coast before the 2nd World War. This beautiful 45 footer is an outstanding example of the breed. She was originally built and launched at their famous yard on the shores of Seattle’s Lake Union. The Lake Unions were built by the outstanding Pacific Northwest craftsmen of the period to withstand the rigors of the northern waters and out of woods so fine that they are simply no longer available; in general, these boats tend to be more robust, and of heavier scantlings than most classics. It is not known how many 45 foot bridge deck cruisers were built by the Lake Union Dry Dock Company, but only five are known to exist today, including two built in 1928 and two others built in 1929. This vessel is the only 1930 model known to be still in existence. We consider her to be an exceptional buy in an Antique Cruiser and a highly desirable yacht, as well as being a Pacific Northwest and West Coast Treasure.
LOA: 45’5”
Beam: 12’1”
Draft: 3’6“
Ford Lehman Marine Diesel Engine – 120hp
Although technically a bridge deck cruiser, boats of this design were advertised by the Lake Union Dry Dock Company as "Dream Boats."

| Superyachts: For Sale: 38’ Aerodyne AD-38 Cruising Sailboat |
 |
AERODYNE AD-38 RACING/CRUISING SAILING YACHT
THE AERODYNE 38 was designed as a fast easy-to-sail "cruiser / racer" with comfortable accommodations. Cockpit size and interior space are carefully balanced to achieve this dual role. Good performance was high on the priority list.
The result is an attractive, easily handled, contemporary "club racer" with plenty of space on deck and a lot of volume down below. This type of hull-form combines very good reserve stability with low wetted surface - a boat that sails well across the wind range. She sails at low heel angles, which improves both comfort and the efficiency of the rig and foils. On the performance side the design is influenced by developments in both Open Class BOC/Vendee Globe types and fast round-the-buoys designs, not handicapped by restrictive "rating" rules. The Aerodyne 38 also benefits from the designer's experience with successful long-distance custom cruising yachts.
ON DECK
THE AERODYNE 38's is 11.5 ft (3.5m) long! Not only is it well laid out for a racing crew, but in cruising mode adds considerable outdoor living space and yet will drain quickly through the transom should a sea come aboard. The cockpit seats are wide and long enough to sleep on.
The carbon fiber wheel is large to allow steering from the side-deck, and well-placed foot-cleats are provided for the helmsman when standing behind the wheel. There is also a cleat down the center of the "crew" cockpit for bracing when sailing upwind, and the space between the seats, over 3 ft. (1m), is wide enough for a good cockpit table. There is a big locker to port, and cooking gas is in a dedicated locker to starboard, aft.
All sail controls lead aft to rope-clutches and winches on the cabin top. Main halyard, reefing, vang, spinnaker halyard, headsail furling, bowsprit and spinnaker controls are all handled from here. The bowsprit retracts into a waterproof housing, with service access down below.
Going forward, the side-decks are wide and unobstructed helped by the outboard shrouds. The anchor is stowed in its own flush locker, which also houses the recessed jib-furling drum.
The Aerodyne 38 has an innovative recessed toe-rail running around the perimeter of the entire deck giving a secure footing, and making it comfortable for hiking out. An optional dodger protects the forward part of the cockpit.
DOWN BELOW
THE AERODYNE 38 has a well-lit, comfortable interior with excellent ventilation. The layout includes double cabins forward and aft, each with their own hanging lockers and stowage areas.
The saloon has settee-berths either side, with lockers and shelves outboard. Six can sit around the drop-leaf table, which has bottle storage in the center section.
At the base of the companionway, the head, with sink, lockers and foul-weather gear stowage is to port, and a well-ventilated, comfortable aft cabin is to starboard. The "C"- shaped galley is forward of the aft cabin, with a double sink on centerline over the engine, generous drawers, and an icebox outboard. There are lockers above the two-burner stove/oven. This is a good seagoing galley.
There is a full-size nav station opposite the galley with a chart locker, recess for a lap-top computer, drawers and storage under the seat. The electrical panel and electronics are outboard where they are easy to see and use. Tools and a waste bin are kept under the companionway steps.
CONSTRUCTION
THE ENTIRE AERODYNE 38 is built of Epoxy resin - the best material for composite boat construction. It is considerably stronger, tougher and more durable than the polyester or vinylester resins used in conventional production boat hulls. This, combined with directional E-glass fabrics, high quality core materials appropriate for each area and carbon fiber reinforced structural framing ensures high strength, stiffness and longevity associated with one-off custom boats. Similarly, the Aerodyne 38 is painted with an Awlgrip finish which gives a tougher, high-gloss finish than gel-coat.
SYSTEMS
THE AERODYNE 38 engine is a Yanmar 3GM (27 bhp) Saildrive, positioned in the middle of the boat for best weight distribution and excellent service access. Fuel is under the starboard settee, aft, with one fresh water tank ahead of it, and another to port, forward of the batteries. Capacities are: 25 gallons (95 litres) of fuel; 50 gallons (190 litres) of water.
PERFORMANCE
THE AERODYNE 38 is designed for fast sailing! She has high form-stability, excellent power-to-weight ratio (SA/Displ=30.13!), long waterline (Disp/L=117), a fine entry for wave penetration, and ‘planing’ sections aft for easy surfing. Keel and rudder are carefully proportioned for excellent control and upwind ability. Extensive Computer Velocity Prediction studies show that the Aerodyne38 has the satisfying ability to sail faster than boats five or ten feet longer, boat for boat!
The Aerodyne38 is fast, stable, easy and fun to sail and has a great cockpit and interior for cruising and racing. We think that handsome, contemporary looks add to the appeal!

| Sailing Yachts: For Sale: 47’ Aerodyne AD-47 Cruising Sailboat |
 |
CALL TO DISCUSS YOUR BUILD OPTIONS…
AERODYNE AD-47 RACING/CRUISING SAILING YACHT
THE AERODYNE 47 is now available in “Regatta Sport” (RS) and “Grand Touring” (GT) as well as the “Blue Water” version mentioned below. The RS follows the lead set by the AD-38 and the AD-43 providing a lightweight unrestricted design for performance on and off the racecourse. With a more serious approach to sailing, the RS version has molded non-skid fiberglass decks and a tastefully minimalist interior for maximum enjoyment and minimum maintenance. The new AD-47 GT embodies the definitive European luxury performance yacht. Teak decks and twin wheels combine with a tall carbon rig and a deep bulbed keel for exceptional style and pace. The heat-cured epoxy construction envelopes a cavernous, beautifully handcrafted interior all in a package with an overall displacement of under 24,000 lbs (11,000 kg)!
The Aerodyne 47 is designed from the start with a priority on good sailing characteristics. The hull is fine forward to give a smooth ride, and the round-sectioned stern provides excellent tracking and steering characteristics at any sailing heel angle. The hull has a small waterplane (footprint) for low wetted surface (reduced drag) and the hull flares out to the broad beam to give excellent sailing stability and is very easily driven under sail or power. The Aerodyne47 has a polar performance diagram that will please those who sail for its own rewards and pleasantly surprise those used to less refined cruising craft.
Aerodyne 47 RS and GT - A taller rig combined with twin wheels and a deep bulbed fin keel enable Aerodyne 47 RS and GT to fully capitalize on the fast, stable hull form designed by Rodger Martin also shared by the AD-47 Blue Water. A new deck layout provides a larger cockpit for enhanced crew work and relaxing cruising with cockpit seats measuring a full 6’6” (2m). Control lines are led aft underneath the deck to jammers positioned in front of the cockpit winches for easy access. The twin wheels permit a good view of the headsail while steering.
AERODYNE 47 COMPOSITE PLAN
Voted 2003 Cruising World Boat of the Year! The AD-47 Blue Water was designed by Rodger Martin as a “cruiser/racer” with a difference - to deliver the ultimate in performance shorthanded sailing. Features such as a self-tacking jib and a shoal draft keel integral with the hull for seamless high-strength construction are examples of the thought that has gone into this capable offshore tour de force. The heat-cured epoxy construction envelopes a cavernous, beautifully handcrafted interior all in a package with an overall displacement of only 25,400 lbs!
The hull itself, is shaped for performance and sea kindly motion, based on the designer’s experience with Round-The-World racing boats. The structure of the yacht consists of high performance fibers pre-impregnated with epoxy resin and reinforced with carbon fiber. The high strength race boat construction is considerably stronger than conventional polyester or vinylester production boat lay-ups for safety and piece of mind.
THE SAIL PLAN
THE AERODYNE 47 Blue Water was designed with speed, safety, ease of handling with a go anywhere attitude. The extremely lightweight construction mated with an easily driven race bred hull allows the adoption of a shorter rig for clearance under bridges along the intercoastal while knocking out impressive VMGs.
Dual roller furling headsails and deeply reefed main allow for a wide sailplan range. The self tacking working jib, when utilized with the optional vanged jib boom is a breeze to handle adding to your sailing pleasure. A standard carbon sloop rig with swept back spreaders and SA/D of 20 makes for good performance at all wind speeds without the hassle of running backstays. Navtec discontinuous Nitronic 50 rod rigging is specified for best strength/ weight/ drag/ reliability operation.
All working sail controls are led aft to the helm station for ease of handling without disturbing the crew. Electric winches handle all significant loads and a convenient hydraulics panel at the helm allows for easy adjustment of the hydraulic boom vang, outhaul and backstays.
ON DECK
STARTING FROM THE bow; a well-engineered bowsprit/anchoring system is well-integrated with the needs of the bow pulpit and the headstay furling. The base for the jib’s self-tacking boom is just aft of the furler and out of the way of the vertical-axis windlass. Two big, self-draining deck lockers give access to chain and rode on one side and to storage for a furling drifter and/or gennaker on the other. The lockers are divided by a structural longitudinal bulkhead.
A built in toerail, an integral part of the deck design, surrounds the entire deck. The side decks are wide and clear as the chainplates are out at the hull for superior mast support with reduced compression and rigging loads. The house is low forward and carefully blended into the deck. Hatches are numerous. The boat can be sailed without leaving the cockpit. Furling, reef lines, sheets for main and jib, and all other sail controls lead aft to the dodger on each side. They then run in special covered areas behind the cockpit seat backrests to a row of jammers and winches on each side. These winches are placed so as to be handy to the helmsman as well as anyone in the cockpit.
The area under the hard dodger is long enough to allow sitting, facing aft, straight-legged within the available aft plastic curtains. An area on the port side, on the house top is made flat for laying out a chart. The middle of the 3-paneled front can be opened for ventilation. The top part of the pantry, accessible easily from the cockpit, holds an EPIRB and has a place for binoculars and other small items of use on deck. The port side cockpit locker gives access to the workshop/storage area below.
The helm has comfortable seating all around. The slightly raised seat area each side of the wheel helps keep deck water away. Winches for the drifter or gennaker sheets are located in this area and there are hatches immediately alongside the wheel which access a vented propane and outboard-fuel locker to starboard and a lazarette to port. The seat behind the helm contains the life raft, to port, and a section to starboard can be hinged back onto the remaining part of the seat to allow generous access to the swimming/boarding platform area. Dinghy access and egress is made easy. The deck and cockpit are well thought out, and will allow the boat to be adapted to use without the hard dodger (and with a folding soft dodger) with minor changes.
DOWN BELOW
THE OWNER'S SUITE is forward, with easy, open, well lit spaces and huge storage. A ‘wall’ of hanging lockers and drawers on the starboard side joins a vanity, with a sink and lockers below. Large drawers below the berth have additional longer-term storage outboard. The cabin is set well aft of the bow, so enjoys a beamy part of the hull. The head and shower are forward of this, once again spacious and well lit.
The main mast bulkhead divides the owner’s suite from the saloon. Once again, open use of space and natural light prevail. The settee to starboard has a slide-out centre section that forms an ottoman for relaxed conversation, facing the entertainment lockers behind the u-shaped seating area opposite. On both sides there are hull ports for outside views and excellent lockers fore and aft of the ports. A deep, full-sized nav. station/desk abuts the starboard settee, with a swivel-out seat facing instruments outboard and a full electrical panel on the bulkhead aft. A deep filing cabinet is built into the base of the settee, alongside the navigator’s left leg.
On the opposite side the galley is full of well-thought-out features. A large work-surface area is surrounded by high fiddles. The centerline double sink is situated over the engine and has good space around it for setting up plates and drinks. The athwartship countertop is wide and houses a large locker and, outboard, a slide-out garbage bin which reveals a recycling bin when slid out further. Very handy. Fridge and freezer are outboard, with a convenient front-opening door to the fridge, as well as top access. Overhead lockers abound outboard, and lead aft to the microwave with extractor above a 3-burner Force 10 stove and oven. Perhaps the crowning feature of the galley is a dedicated pantry, full height, in the area alongside the companionway. This is high and wide enough to provide enormous storage, but kept shallow so that food items are not lost in the back and hard to retrieve. Once again, good light and ventilation is provided in this area. The galley itself is the ideal “C” shape. You’ll never use a “U” again!
On the starboard side there is a handy head and shower, shared with the guest cabin, aft. This has a huge double berth, ventilated by hatches into the cockpit footwell and with a port in the hull and in the house-side. Hanging lockers and a bureau outboard are augmented by storage drawers under the berth and under the companionway, inboard.
On the opposite side, abaft the galley pantry, a door leads into a workshop and storage area, also accessible by a hatch in the cockpit seat above. This area has a workbench outboard, at which one can work while standing in the cockpit locker. You might feel like a bit on a nana while so disposed, but you will be the envy of your fellow skippers. Inboard in the area below the cockpit footwell, there is storage for slide-out plastic bins, as well as a ‘pump-room’ at the forward end. There is additional storage behind the aft cabin and workshop bulkhead.
The whole interior has an easy flow to it with carefully apportioned space for each area’s function and enjoyment.
CONSTRUCTION
AERODYNE YACHTS HAS long experience in high-specification composite structures. This integrity was behind their decision to build all their boats with Epoxy resin, heat-cured for the best possible properties. This is the construction method chosen for the best custom yachts, and gives the Aerodyne 47 an extra margin of strength and durability. The structural epoxy framing system is specifically engineered to absorb and disperse keel-grounding loads and rigging loads as well as wave impacts. The full watertight bulkhead in the bow, 6.5 feet (2 m) from the stem, is a further offshore safety feature. All bulkheads and most of the interior are cored for structural stability and light weight. There is no better composite structural system. An additional improvement in finish and weight savings is that all the Aerodyne boats are primed and painted with Awlgrip Marine paints. They have no gel coats or mat!
SYSTEMS
A PLEASANT OFFSPRING of the diminished weight and wetted area is the reduced horsepower required to motor effectively. Only 32 shaft horsepower are required to move the fully loaded Aerodyne 47 at her near 9 knot hull speed. The modest fuel consumption of her non-turbo 56 horsepower Yanmar diesel engine gives range for long passages, while maintaining abundant reserve for accessories and powering hard in heavy seas and currents.
The engine is fitted within the galley sink-island. All filters and maintenance items are in a locker at the forward end, and general engine access is superb, with doors on every side. Proper gasketing and insulation ensure quiet operation.
Comfort aboard is improved by the use of modern electrical appliances. A double approach was taken toward this end; provide a great amount of available power and use it sparingly. The design incorporates four very capacious 8D house batteries; a 24 volt system to distribute it efficiently; and a huge 150 amp @24vDC alternator to replace it effectively. This allows power winches, windlass, autopilot, refrigeration and lighting as well as modest air-conditioning and a washer dryer. The incorporation of the latest aerogel insulation technology and superior refrigeration equipment gives 2-3 day hold-over within normal recharge voltages. High efficiency fluorescent, halogen and LED lighting make light demands of the system. Many shipboard lifestyle compromises have thereby been avoided.
PERFORMANCE
THE AERODYNE 47 is designed from the start with a priority on good sailing characteristics. The hull is fine forward to give a smooth ride, and the round-sectioned stern provides excellent tracking and steering characteristics at any sailing heel angle. The hull has a small waterplane (footprint) for low wetted surface (reduced drag) and the hull flares out to the broad beam to give excellent sailing stability. The combination of a fine, wave-piercing entry, a narrow waterplane and light weight make for a hull that is very easily driven under sail or power. These features are important, and are ignored or overlooked in many of the designs of other cruising boats. The Aerodyne 47 has a polar performance diagram that will please those who sail for its own rewards and pleasantly surprise those used to less refined cruising craft.
The jib is self-tacking, so a shorthanded crew can tack just by turning the wheel or resetting the autopilot. A furling drifter or a gennaker can be set flying from the short bowsprit for enjoyable light air sailing. All sail and reefing controls come back to jammers and winches each side of the cockpit. The similarities with singlehanded racing boats will be apparent to anyone who experiences her ease of helm and sail-handling. The Aerodyne 47 as described here is sized to go through the Intracoastal Waterway bridges and draws only 6 feet (1.83m). She is also available with greater rig height and draft.
The first Aerodyne 47, “Eagle’s Wings” was launched and sea-trialled in Cape Town in that wild coast’s notoriously rough conditions and was praised for her easy motion, speed and control stability. She was then sailed on her own bottom, to the U. S. East Coast to be delivered to her owners, Vic and Peggy DeMattia. She has since cruised the U. S. East Coast from Florida to Rhode Island and made her debut at the Newport Boat Show. She has also been tested, reviewed and hailed for her success as a fast comfortable cruising boat by Blue Water Sailing, Cruising World and was chosen by Outside magazine for the annual ‘must have’ ‘O’ list!
